 Calgarians are getting their first look at the master plan for St. Patrick’s Island.

The 12 hectares of land will one day join the East Village to the north and south banks of the bow, thanks to a new bridge. There are also big development plans for the island itself.

The city chose two land development teams who will be working together on the project, one from Denver and one from New York.

Work has already begun on the new pedestrian bridge which will connect the island to the community of Bridgeland, and also to the East Village

Some of the new projects for the island itself include restoring an island lagoon, creating a boat launch, trails, boardwalks, a new venue for festivals and performances as well as picnic and play areas.

A lot of the structures to be erected on the East side of the island, near the Calgary Zoo, and the west side of the island will retain a lot of its natural beauty.

The cost of the island redevelopment and bridge construction is $45 million.

The bridge should be ready by the summer of 2013, and the island ready for the public sometime in 2014.
